Saffron, the most expensive herb in the world, has been cultivated since 1500 BC. In order to collect one ounce of saffron you would need to harvest the threads (or stigma) from 4,000 flowers! Saffron is also linked to many health benefits. It is super high in antioxidants and acts as a mood booster, reduces PMS symptoms, relieves pain, improves libido, boosts brain function and memory, fights cancer, & more. Read below to find 7 different ways to add this precious flower to your next signature cocktail!

1) SAFFRON SALT

Create your own saffron salt to add depth to your next Margarita or Daiquiri. Family Spice has a great recipe for saffron salt: (We like using Himalayan salt or sea salt). Add 1/4 cup of salt and big pinch of saffron together. (Feel free to add a pinch of other dried herbs or spices to create a custom mix!) Muddle with mortar and pestle until smooth. Add 1- 2 drops of water to bring out the bright color. Allow the salt to dry, then store in a sealed, tight jar.

2) SAFFRON SYRUP

Saffron syrup is another “simple” way to add this floral flavor to your next elixir. You can make this simple syrup using the sweetener of your choice - just make a standard simple syrup (equal parts sugar + water) with a few saffron threads. We love a honey-saffron syrup in cocktails - use it for a twist a Gold Rush or combine with ginger syrup, lime, vodka, & soda for a refreshing Mule. For the honey-saffron syrup, let about 15 strands of saffron sit in 1 cup of water for about an hour. Strain out the strands, boil the saffron water and mix in 3/4 cups of honey. Let cool before placing into a glass, airtight container.

3) Strega

Strega is an herbal sweet, Italian liqueur containing anise, fennel, mint, and of course, saffron. Saffron gives this soft digestif its prominent yellow color. The liqueur includes around 70 botanicals (many of them are still secret). You can use this “witch’s liqueur” in a number of cocktails like the Gargoyle & Spire , The Witch’s Kiss, or The Night Tripper

4) Bénédictine

Bénédictine is another herbal, sweet, and aromatic liqueur. Bénédictine hails from France and the secret recipe dates back to a Bénédictine monk’s elixir from the 1500s. While we know the liqueur contains 27 botanicals, saffron is one of the few ingredients that has been revealed. This revered liqueur is a staple in classics like the Vieux Carre, De La Louisiane, Monte Carlo, or a Chrysanthemum.

4) Saffron Garnish

Often overlooked, the garnish you choose can transform your cocktail. Sprinkle a touch of saffron on the top of your cocktail for a lovely visual display. Saffron will also add a soft layer of aromatics to the top of your cocktail.

5) DIY Saffron Liqueur

Why not try your hand at creating your own magical, saffron elixir? We like this recipe from Eat Boutique - but feel free to experiment and add other botanicals and fruits (be sure to write down your recipe!)

6) Saffron Infusion

Short on time? No worries - choose your favorite spirit off the shelf (we’ve used rum, vodka, and reposado tequila so far) and respectfully add about 10 strands (a nice pinch) of saffron into your spirit. Let it sit for about a day or two (give it a nice shake from time to time). Strain out the strands when the taste is to your liking!

7) Muddle, Muddle, Muddle

Create a decadent cocktail in a pinch - choose your favorite cocktail recipe - let’s say an Old Fashioned. Gently muddle a few strands of saffron in with your sugar, add your bitters and bourbon. Stir with ice, strain, & garnish with an orange twist!
