These past few years have been filled with transitions - relationships, routines, homes, jobs…you name it. Across the nation, we brace for the next financial transition as we hear the whispers echo around us: “recession”.

Here’s the good news - bartending has been proven to be a recession-proof job! For many in the industry, this is a familiar situation featuring the same rhetoric and fears from recessions past. Recessions mean tighter budgets and smaller spending habits. And of course, not all bars and restaurants survive, recession or not. However, at the best of times and the worst of times, bars tend to stay afloat while some even thrive. Also, the opportunities for bartenders continue to grow despite the recession. Myfuture.com says,

"Employment of bartenders is projected to grow 32 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations.”

Whether you work behind a well-established bar or a brand new establishment, the key, says Ryan Maybee, is “Don’t take any person, customer or guest for granted. Make sure they all feel appreciated and welcomed.” Bars are the place people go to in good times and in bad. As a bartender, you can make someone’s great day into an unforgettable one or turn someone’s bad day around! Bars provide a community, stability, and escape in an unstable world. This is where someone can make your day with light banter, a cheesy joke, or even a simple cheers. Focus on the little things - providing good service (remember - , keeping your bar clean and welcoming, etc.
