Bartending School & Certification Classes in San Francisco
Real bartending training. Inside a real San Francisco bar.
The Cocktail Camp is a hands-on bartending school in San Francisco offering in-person bartending certification, advanced mixology training, and online bartending courses for beginners, working bartenders, hospitality professionals, career changers, and cocktail enthusiasts.
Since 2015, we've taught students the practical skills of bartending through hands-on training behind real working bars, not classroom simulations.
Our San Francisco bartending classes are held at Blackbird Bar, 2124 Market Street, where students learn proper bar technique, cocktail construction, workflow, speed, hospitality, and our signature Cocktail Architecture™ approach to understanding how drinks work.
Come here to:
Become a bartender.
Build practical skills, train behind a real bar, earn your certification, and receive lifetime job placement assistance plus résumé support.
Become a better bartender.
Strengthen the fundamentals you learned on the job, refine your technique, and finally understand the why behind what you're already doing.
Become ridiculously good at making cocktails.
No career change required. Serious cocktail enthusiasts are just as welcome here as future bartenders.
You Could Spend Years Figuring This Out on Your Own.
A little from a coworker. A little from YouTube. A lot from making drinks badly until you eventually make them well.
Or we can teach you.
Bartending is physical. It requires repetition, organization, timing, technique, hospitality, and muscle memory.
That's why our students train behind an actual bar.
You'll pour. Shake. Stir. Build. Taste. Screw something up. Figure out why. And do it again.
Because there's a big difference between knowing how to make a drink and knowing how to bartend.
We teach you both.

Master of Mixology Certification
Go beyond knowing how to make drinks. Learn how to create them.
Our Master of Mixology Certification in San Francisco is an immersive advanced program for working bartenders, Cocktail Camp graduates, hospitality professionals, and serious cocktail enthusiasts who want to understand the craft at a much deeper level.
This isn't about memorizing another hundred recipes.
It's about understanding why cocktails work.
You'll explore flavor, technique, spirits, ingredients, cocktail development, and our Cocktail Architecture™ system while spending extensive time experimenting and practicing behind a fully stocked working bar.
If our Bartending Certification teaches you how to confidently work behind a bar, Master of Mixology teaches you how to think like a mixologist.
This Is Where Things Get Interesting.
Why does one small change completely transform a cocktail?
What actually makes a drink balanced?
How do you create something original without throwing six interesting ingredients into a shaker and hoping for the best?
How do bartenders develop their palates?
And how do you get from I can make this recipe to I understand this recipe well enough to reinvent it?
That's where Master of Mixology begins.
Over the course of the program, we'll move beyond foundational bartending and dig into the creative and technical side of the craft.
You'll taste. Build. Break things. Fix them. Make syrups. Make bitters. Create original cocktails. Spend a lot of time behind the bar.
Basically, we get nerdy.
Very, very nerdy.
What You'll Learn
Cocktail Architecture™
Instead of relying entirely on memorized recipes, you'll go deeper into our Cocktail Architecture™ approach to understanding how drinks are constructed.
You'll study balance, structure, flavor relationships, and classic cocktail families so you can begin looking at a collection of ingredients and understanding what they can become.
The goal isn't to memorize every drink in existence.
It's to understand cocktails well enough that you don't have to.
Original Cocktail Creation
This is where you stop simply following recipes.
You'll develop your own cocktails, experiment with substitutions and variations, troubleshoot drinks that aren't working, and learn how to refine an idea into something you'd actually be proud to put on a menu.
You'll learn how to ask the much more useful question:
Why isn't this drink working, and how do I fix it?
Advanced Technique
We'll move beyond the fundamentals and work on the techniques, precision, consistency, efficiency, and instincts that separate simply knowing recipes from understanding the craft.
For working bartenders, this is also an opportunity to examine habits you've picked up on the job, strengthen weak spots, and develop a more intentional approach behind the bar.
Spirits + Liqueur Tasting
We'll taste and explore a range of spirits and liqueurs while examining how category, production, and flavor influence the finished cocktail.
The goal isn't just knowing what a bottle is.
It's understanding what you can do with it.
Syrups, Bitters + Ingredients
Learn to create cocktail components from scratch, including syrups and bitters, while exploring how bartenders manipulate sweetness, bitterness, acidity, aroma, texture, and balance.
Then you'll put those ingredients to work developing drinks of your own.
Lots of Time Behind the Bar
And we mean lots.
You'll have time to practice, experiment, make mistakes, ask questions, try again, and develop the physical confidence that only comes from actually working with the tools and space.
There is no substitute for time behind a bar.
So we give you some.
From Training to the Real Thing
Your Graduate Bar Apprenticeship
The Master of Mixology program concludes with a two-day graduate apprenticeship at a reputable San Francisco bar.
You'll have the opportunity to take what you've been learning and experience the rhythm, setup, expectations, and environment of an operating bar from the other side.
For students pursuing hospitality professionally, it's an opportunity to gain additional real-world experience and put your training into context.
For serious enthusiasts, it's a chance to experience a side of the cocktail world most guests never get to see.
Either way, wear comfortable shoes.
Who Is Master of Mixology For?
"I'm already a bartender."
Excellent.
A lot of great bartenders learned the old-fashioned way: someone eventually handed them a bar key and essentially said, good luck.
If you've been working behind the bar but want to deepen your understanding of cocktails, spirits, ingredients, flavor, technique, and drink development, Master of Mixology can help connect the dots between what you've learned to do and why it works.
"I've completed Cocktail Camp's Bartending Certification."
Welcome back.
You've built the foundation. Now we get to play.
Master of Mixology takes the concepts introduced in our certification program and goes considerably deeper into cocktail development, flavor, spirits, advanced technique, ingredients, experimentation, and creative work.
"I don't work in the industry. I'm just extremely into cocktails."
We respect this.
You don't need aspirations of becoming a beverage director to care deeply about the craft.
Serious enthusiasts with a strong grasp of cocktail fundamentals are absolutely welcome. You'll receive the same advanced training, tastings, experimentation, and time behind the bar as our industry students.
Just know that this is an intensive program.
We're going considerably beyond How do I make an Old Fashioned?
"I'm completely new to bartending."
We love you too. But start with our Bartending Certification Course.
Master of Mixology assumes you're already comfortable with foundational bartending concepts and is designed to build on them.
Not sure where you belong? Ask us. We're happy to help you choose the program that makes the most sense for you.

“What an incredible experience! The Cocktail Camp Masterclass (I did mine at Blackbird in SF) was absolutely phenomenal. Getting to actually build cocktails behind the bar in a real craft cocktail environment was a complete game changer. You can’t replicate that authentic bar- learning experience anywhere else in the city.
The highlight of my time was getting hands-on, practice during actual bar shifts. That’s a big perk of the program, that you actually get live reps on the bar during business hours. I was luckyy that there was a massive event happening nearby during one of my apprenticeship shifts, which gave the opportunity to make dozens of cocktails in a live, high-pressure scenario.
Eric, who taught the classes, was outstanding both professionally and personally. He went above and beyond to answer all my questions and has made himself available as an ongoing resource within San Francisco’s bar community… for job opportunities, connections, or just general guidance. You can tell he’s genuinely invested in his students’ success.
If you’re serious about cocktails as a career, and want real-world experience in an amazing bar setting, this master class is absolutely worth it. Highly recommend!

Not at all. Our Bartending Certification Course is designed for complete beginners, new bartenders, working hospitality professionals who want to strengthen their skills, and cocktail enthusiasts who simply want to learn the craft.
If you've never held a jigger before, we'll teach you. If you've been bartending for years but learned everything on the job, we'll help you strengthen your foundation, refine your technique, and fill in the gaps.
-
Absolutely. You do not have to want a career in bartending to come to Cocktail Camp.
We have plenty of students who simply love cocktails, want to become better home bartenders, entertain often, or think learning to bartend sounds considerably more fun than taking up pickleball.
You'll receive the same hands-on training as our career-minded students, just without the pressure to turn it into a profession.
-
Yes. Graduates of our in-person Bartending Certification program receive lifetime job placement assistance, as well as résumé development and consultation.
We'll help you strengthen your résumé, identify opportunities, prepare for the hiring process, and present your training and experience effectively. Because you've trained behind a real working bar, you'll also leave with practical experience that can help you stand out among other entry-level candidates.
Our career support doesn't expire when your class ends. If you need help again down the road, come back to us.
-
We offer lifetime job placement assistance, but we don't guarantee employment, because ultimately the decision to hire you belongs to the employer.
We're intentionally transparent about that.
What we can do is help make you a stronger candidate. You'll train behind a real bar, develop practical bartending skills, receive résumé support and consultation, and have access to our job placement assistance for life.
Our goal isn't simply to point you toward a job opening. It's to help you be ready when the opportunity arrives.

California doesn't issue a traditional occupational "bartending license" just to become a bartender. However, California does require most people who serve alcohol for consumption at an on-premises licensed business, including bars and restaurants, to complete Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) training and obtain a valid RBS certification through the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC).
RBS certification is separate from The Cocktail Camp's Bartending Certification. Our program teaches the practical craft and skills of bartending; RBS covers the state-mandated responsible alcohol service requirements.
Always check current California ABC requirements before beginning work.

The program explores cocktail creation, advanced techniques, flavor theory, spirits and liqueurs, syrups and bitters, extensive hands-on experimentation, industry knowledge, and a graduate apprenticeship in a San Francisco bar.
